Saanich lands must be part of affordable housing solution, says Murdock

September 22, 2022

Saanich, B.C. - Saanich Mayoral candidate Dean Murdock wants Saanich-owned property to be part of affordable housing solutions in the capital region.

"Saanich has an affordability problem," said the former three-term Saanich Councillor. "Young professionals are leaving Saanich because of the high cost of living. Older adults struggle to find places to age in place. We need solutions that create affordable homes that allow people to put down roots and age in place in Saanich."

Murdock proposes using Saanich-owned lands to leverage senior government funding for affordable housing. He points to a Saanich property at McKenize Ave and Cedar Hill Rd that is currently home to a Greater Victoria Public Library branch.

"The library is looking for an updated facility. Let's work with a non-profit housing provider to secure senior government funding and create affordable housing on this site," said Murdock. "We can get a new library branch on the main floor with affordable housing units above it. We'd even have room for a doctor's office and a daycare."

The provincial government has earmarked $1.9 billion over 10 years through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund. The 2022 federal budget provides $1.5 billion over two years for its Rapid Housing Initiative. According to Murdock, both funds can be leveraged to create purpose-built affordable housing in Saanich.

Municipal elections occur on October 15 across the province.
